National gallery of Ireland

National GalleryNational Gallery of Ireland

To escape thousands of screaming and annoying children (they called it birthday party) we decided to spend last sunday´s afternoon in the national gallery of Ireland.

Well, we really are no experts of arts and so most of the time we made fun of the strange and ugly people – especially children – in the (certainly famous and high-quality) pictures we saw. And we saw many ugly children, e.g. the son of Hellboy and Liz, a round red 4-5 year old boy. Ok, it was funny for us but not for the other people we met… I´ve never seen such strange views at us before in my life.

While we went through the museum we heard a kind of orchestra playing somewhere containing cello, drums, e-guitar and some other instruments which normally do not find together.

One last advice: Never ever eat doner (Döner) at Abakebabra in Dublin!!! When we came back from our exhausting culture trip we decided to celebrate our new art knowledge with a special lunch at Abakebabra, a kind of Doner-McDonald´s. So we ordered a Doner Kebab for 3.50€, but what we got was meat in a pancake, swimming in a spicy sauce and only eatable with a fork we fortunately got with our meal. Do it better, go to Subway or somewhere else but do not eat Doner in Dublin!

Mirrors

Reeling from an accidental shooting during his time as a NYPD detective, Ben Carson (Kiefer Sutherland, putting forth minimal effort) has drowned his guilt in booze and rage. Trying to clean up his act and win his family (including Amy Smart and Paula Patton, fighting her cleavage for screentime) back, Ben takes a job as a security officer guarding the spooky ruins of a department store that suffered a massive fire. During his rounds, Ben spies strange visions in the massive mirrors that decorate the hallways, images that forecast gruesome death. Attempting to investigate the history of the store and its past tragedy, Ben finds he’s brought the visions home to terrorize his loved ones, forcing him to fight back against the ghostly wrath of the mysterious reflections.

Mirrors

Mirrors

This was the plot I found on the internet, when I was searching for a good movie to see last weekend and it sounded so interesting, I hardly had a chance not to go into cinema… well, it took some persuasion to get Isabell coming with me, but finally we sat in front of screen no. 2 in the cineworld cinema.

And the movie turned out to be a good one, not the best horror movie I´ve ever seen but good enough to recommend it. The movie plays with the fear of the humans that mirrors do not only reflect the incoming light but also are doors to another world behind the glass where evil things happen. What would you do if you go away from your mirror and your mirror image would stay where it is and everything that happens to it would happen to you, injuries and pain?

Comment from Isabell: Waaaaaaa! Zombies!!!!!!!! She lost her jawbone! Uaeeeeh! I liked the front credits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, you see, it wasn´t a bad horror movie, but the end was a bit disappointing… I think they planned an end like in “the 6th sense” but what finally came out was just a small surprise and not completly logical…

If you want a commendation: Watch this movie in cinema, the effect will be much bigger than in front of your TV.

Some pictures and my first and last discussion with a homeless guy

Well, here are a few new pictures I took in Dublin and a story about a new experience I´ve made… ok, I had known it before but anyway I was stupid enough to do it…

I´ve been standing at Eden Quay, waiting for my bus, when a homeless guy tottered towards and spoke to me:

He: “Sorry, I´m homeless. I search for a room. I need 4€ for a room so I can sleep!”
Me: “Well, I don´t know if that´s such a good idea… I think you´d only buy alcohol or so if I give you money…”
He: “Nonononono, I don´t buy alcohol!”
Me: “But you´re drunken!”
He (holding a bottle of coke towards me): “You want some drink?”
Me: “No.”
He: “I´m drunken? No, I´m not drunken!”
Me: “Hey, I´m sorry, but I won´t give you anything, I´m sure you will buy something like this”.

Ok, he left me now but after a few steps he turned around to me and… “FUCK YOU! FUCK OFF!” and something that I didn´t understand… well, I bet it was better so *g*
So he swore at me across the whole street and I vowed never beginning a discussion with a drunken homeless guy again… you cannot win.

Now I always change the side of the street if I see him in the city… maybe he remembers me *g*

Oktoberfest im Porterhouse

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest

As you can see on the poster, the Octoberfest didn’t even stop in Ireland. Well, it’s alright with me, finally a good beer again *g*

The Porterhouse is a bigger pub in Dublin Templebar, that we (=my company) visited, because visrez won the “Dublin City Enterprise Award 2008″, a nice golden (?) cub, which is passed every year.

This pub is not only famous for its great interior (the walls of three floors are equiped with beer bottles from all over the world), also for the… I just call it “theme weeks”, so in this case Octoberfest, at 31 of October is under the motto of “Halloween”

Be that as it may, on friday I got to know the pleasure to experience the Irish culture… and so far that on the next day I got hit by the associated cultural shock. However, it was worth the price, the evenig was too amusing to miss it.

Howth bei Nebel

When I came back from work today, I was not able to see further than 50m, the fog was really thick.
However, the atmosphere was really nice so I decided to take some photos… for lack of a stand i used a rubbish bin, but that´s art of the moment and the bin is just another element of it *g*

—————————

Seehunde in Howth

(Again) unfortunately the weather wasn´t the best this day but at least it did not rain…

The seils belong to a family of 9 animals which apparently live in the inner harbour of Howth on tourists feeding them with fish offal that you can buy in a little fish store in the harbour. They are really cuddly but also fairly round, but what can you expect if they are feeded every couple of minutes by laughing tourists?

————————

The Boy in the striped pyjamas

The boy in the striped Pyjamas

The boy in the striped Pyjamas

———————–

Well, the movie was nearly as I had imagined: As every movie is about this theme (Holocaust). The composition actually is every time the same, first everybody agrees with what takes place, then something happens and they begin to think about it, and so on. Well, I have watched “Napola” at that time, too, so this movie couldn’t really shock me, but we four Germans in the cinema were after the movie a bit silent, while all the Irish people were in a really good mood.

The actors’ abilitys were very good. I would have expected that the actors would make one of typical german, but that was not the case, the carakters were all kept naturally. I wouldn’t watch the movie another time, but that is because of the theme, it’s recommendable.
